Boogies On Silver Screen

What was once considered the domain of nautankiwallis has today become a way of gaining instant popularity! This is the era of item numbers and there is a whole new brigade of topmost actresses who want to feature in raunchy sequences. Here's a look:

The term 'item girl' has been tagged with Shamita after her famous super hit item songs 'Sharara' in Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai and 'Chori Pe Chori' in Saathiya. Her popularity rose following the super success of her item songs.

She is one woman who has never shied away from flaunting that broad and curvaceous frame. We are talking about Lara Dutta who clearly came across as a stunner with her performance in Khakee. Lara rocked the scene with Aisa Jadoo Dala Re. With the sheer energy, rapid movements and thrusts that she gave into the sequence, Lara stood out as an ace when it came to casting that magical spell on the audiences.

Amrita Arora is one of those sexy Bollywood babes who is known for the item numbers and her song 'Dilli Ki Sardi' tops the list from the movie Zameen. She made to the list of the oomph ladies after the song.

The charming Aishwarya Rai Bachchan managed to break the glass ceiling with her less than 10-minutes of appearance in Bunty Aur Babli. Her act in Kajra Re transformed her from the too-delicate-to-handle beauty to the ultimate gorgeous girl in Bollywood. She had earlier made the audiences pop their eyes in disbelief with her raunchy moves in Shakti grooving with SRK to declare what she thought of the term Ishq Kamina.

Shilpa Shetty's success of her several films can be attributed to her dance sequences that often ends up overshadowing her acting skills. It is almost a decade now, but the spectacular act that Shilpa put up in the song Main aayi hu UP Bihar lootne is still fresh in our minds. The energy with which she did her thumkas and made those inviting gestures created a benchmark on the ‘item number’ stage.

The cat-eyed woman, Kareena Kapoor has just one real item song in her kitty. It was for a film Kya Love Story hai, the sensational singing by Alisha Chinai Its Rocking certainly gave the Bebo a huge popularity.

The oomph diva, Mallika Sherawat created waves with her sensuous moves in Guru. The audiences loved every bit of ‘Maiya Maiya’ as Mallika once again revealed her true colours. Belly-dancing with the appeal of a mermaid, the hotie shook her booty all the way through the Arabic tunes to render that post-hukkah effect.

Urmila Matondkar's 'thumkas' did bit of appeal for RGV Ke Sholay. With kohl in her eyes, smoke in her breath and mystery in her locks, she literally set the stage on fire with 'Mehbooba-0-Mehbooba'. With a tinge of sweetness attached to her, Urmila Matondkar made heads turn once more with her very inviting act in Lajja. Urmila clearly evolved from her 'Rangeela' days with 'Aaiye, Aa Jaaiye'. Till date, her first attempt at an out-and-out item song ranks first on the list of Bollywood’s contemporary item numbers. The innocent-yet-inviting Urmila in 'Chamma Chamma' from China Gate made every heart skip a beat.

First she convinced us to 'Beedi jalile' straight from the heart. This was followed by another sizzling number called 'Phoonk De'. A track for her boyfriend John’s film No Smoking, Bips ensured that the song managed to grab enough eyeballs.

The ageless beauty shaked her leg in a in a classically styled item song in the movie Parineeta. The night club item number saw Rekha in a completely different role and she was producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra's personal choice because of the glamour and enigma only this diva can bring.
